Accreditation Criteria

Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor accreditation criteria

Applicants for Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor accreditation must evidence:

  1. Successful completion of all elements of the iST3000 Practitioner’s Diploma and its academic, practice and professional requirements.
  2. Successful completion of iST4070 1:1 Psychotherapeutic Practice Preparation, including 60 hours in an IiST-approved external placement with a different age group and outside the trainee’s usual workplace.
  3. At least 450 hours of supervised clinical practice evidenced through signed clinical logs. This must include at least 50 hours of supervised clinical work with adults, parents and carers, recorded and verified through the Annual Records of Training.
  4. At least 60 hours of individual personal therapy over a minimum of three years. Together with participation in Dynamics groups, this contributes to the UKCP and CCAP requirement for at least 105 hours of personal therapy and personal development across CPC training.
  5. A completed and signed Annual Record of Training for every year of CPC training.
  6. Records of relevant continuing professional development, courses and professional reading
  7. 聽An enhanced DBS check and current child safeguarding training
  8. A declaration of adherence to the UKCP Code of Ethics and Professional Practice
  9. The completed Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor portfolio checklist and trainee declaration

CPC professional training should normally take at least three years and no longer than seven years. Trainees are expected to apply for UKCP registration within three years of qualifying unless formal mitigating circumstances apply.

Child Psychotherapist accreditation criteria

Applicants for Child Psychotherapist accreditation must already be accredited as Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellors and registered with UKCP. Their portfolio must evidence:

  1. Successful completion of iST4040 Group Analytic Dynamics
  2. Successful completion of iST4050 Child Mental Health
  3. The required MSc qualification
  4. At least 450 hours of supervised clinical practice through signed clinical logs
  5. The required approved external placement
  6. Confirmation from the trainee’s clinical supervisor
  7. At least 80 hours of individual personal therapy, normally 40 hours in each year for at least two years, with confirmation from the personal psychotherapist
  8. At least 60 hours of mother and baby or infant observation, an abridged reflective assignment and a statement from the infant observation supervisor
  9. A completed and signed Annual Record of Training for every year of CP training.
  10. Records of relevant continuing professional development, courses and professional reading
  11. An enhanced DBS check and current child safeguarding training
  12. A declaration of adherence to the UKCP Code of Ethics and Professional Practice
  13. The completed Child Psychotherapist portfolio checklist and trainee declaration

The complete Child Psychotherapist professional training process, including the earlier Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor pathway, should normally take at least four years and no longer than ten years. Trainees are expected to apply for UKCP registration within three years of qualifying unless formal mitigating circumstances apply.

How accreditation decisions are made

Once all pathway requirements have been met, the trainee completes the relevant accreditation submission form and brings together the required portfolio evidence. The completed portfolio must be submitted to the Clinical Training Registrar at least four weeks before the relevant Training Management Board meeting.

The Clinical Training Registrar and Community Course Tutors complete an initial check to confirm that the required information and evidence are present. The Training Management Board then formally considers the application. It meets twice each year, normally in January and July. Following IiST approval, the applicant may apply to UKCP for Full Clinical Membership and registration in the relevant category on the UKCP Child Register.

Appealing an accreditation decision

A trainee may appeal a professional accreditation outcome on one or more of the following grounds:

路 A procedural irregularity

路 Bias or discrimination

路 A material error

路 Exceptional circumstances which could not reasonably have been disclosed earlier

Disagreement with the professional judgement of the IiST decision-making body alone is not a valid ground for appeal. An appeal must be submitted in writing to the IiST Training Registrar within 10 working days of receiving the written outcome. It will be considered by an independent panel whose members were not involved in the original decision. The appellant will receive the outcome in writing.
